STAKES & CHALLENGES

Algeria has a uniquely rich mineral heritage, including both already exploited resources– iron, steel, gold, silver, barite, bentonite, marble, gypsum, phosphate, quartz, salt and various aggregates – and unexploited deposits with high strategic potential such as diamond, manganese, rare earth minerals, tungsten, uranium, as well as a large silicon deposit recently identified in the west of the country.

THowever, this natural abundance should not conceal the numerous challenges facing the national mining sector. From a technical point of view, many available minerals are not directly sealable, requiring complex refining, concentration, and enrichment processes that demand advanced scientific expertise and appropriate industrial infrastructure.

From a scientific point of view, mastering the processes of extraction, transformation and valorization remains a major challenge, particularly for strategic minerals such as rare earths, whose chemical composition requires cutting-edge technologies.

Internationally, competition is intensifying against players with decades of experience and perfectly integrated value chains. Algeria must therefore overcome the challenge of aligning itself with global standards by developing a mining industry capable not only of meeting domestic demand but also of imposing itself in foreign markets.

These stakes are part of a broader perspective, by contributing to the diversification of the national economy, the reduction of dependence on hydrocarbons and the support of the energy and environmental transition.

The growing demand for strategic metals, driven by new technologies, renewable energies and electromobility, gives the Algerian mining sector a historic responsibility: which is to transform its potential into a concrete lever for sustainable and sovereign development.
